What do you think if a male reader is interested to read a female’s novel? The experience had happened to me.
There were some friends of mine surprised about that. They were extremely curious to me and thought that I would not be able to do that. At first, I did not realize that I could have a Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice (P&P) novel.
That time, I was going to conduct a research about P&P and its adaptations. I then stated P&P in my research proposal besides Thomas Hardy’s Far from the Madding Crowd. Guess what? P&P had been selected. Because of that, my experience in reading a female’s writing had begun. Then my lecturer – Mrs. Citra – gave me the novel published by Wordsworth Classics two days before my birthday. I was very delighted because of that. Few weeks later, Mrs. Citra lent me another edition of P&P in Penguin Classics edition, so I could compare from each edition. Again, it was definitely appreciated her effort in supporting me conducting the research.
From P&P – as the classic novel – I could learn many things, about females’ thoughts or their feelings. The main point was about how to be a critical analyst of a literary work written either by male or female author. Finally, I could finish my thesis in time. I was very happy when I could pass my final thesis defense even though it was definitely difficult for me to defend my arguments. I may not a Jane Austen lover, but I definitely love P&P as a female’s literary work, and also its adaptations as a valuable literature for me as a foreign language learner.
