Cloud-Stairs of Doubt – The Whispering Rafters 9

The stairs to the sky longhouse are condensed vapor; doubt for a single heartbeat and the steps dissolve.

The Ascent of Mist and Doubt

The second ledge opened onto an expanse of shifting white that rolled against the cliff face like the surface of a stormy sea. Here, ordinary stone ended. Where the path should have continued across the open chasm, a narrow stairway made of luminous, condensed vapor stretched upward into the swirling grey mists. Each step shimmered with a pale, self-generated light, firm enough to look solid, yet semi-translucent where the wind brushed its edges.

Sulung stepped onto the lowest cloud-step first. His boots made a soft, hollow sound against the vapor, like leather on packed snow. He did not look down into the immense drop beneath the cloud bank.

“Stay close,” Sulung called back over his shoulder, his voice muffled by the thick air. “The steps only hold while your mind does not question them. If you think they are air, they become air.”

Bungsu nodded, setting his foot onto the first glowing riser. It felt remarkably solid under his boot—cool, dense, and unyielding. They began to ascend the staircase, winding higher into the clouds where the world below vanished entirely behind a wall of white vapor.

For a few minutes the climb felt almost manageable. But as the altitude increased, the air grew thinner, and the rhythmic thrumming from the floating longhouse overhead vibrated directly through the cloud-stairs, making the vapor pulse beneath their feet in time with a giant, unseen heartbeat.

Bungsu hesitated. A sudden, cold thought slipped into his mind: We are walking on mist. There is nothing beneath this vapor except a thousand feet of empty air.

The moment the doubt formed, the step beneath his right foot lost its density. The luminous vapor instantly turned thin and watery, dissolving into wisps of fog right as he tried to shift his weight.

“Sulung!” Bungsu gasped, his foot plunging straight through the stair into open space.

The Test of Willpower

Sulung spun around instantly. Without a word of scolding, he lunged forward, catching Bungsu by the shoulder and hauling him backward onto a higher, still-solid block of vapor. The red thread around Bungsu’s wrist flared with a sharp, burning heat against his pulse, pulling his focus away from the dizzying abyss.

Beneath them, a four-foot gap of empty, swirling cloud where the step had been began to widen rapidly, threatening to sever their path entirely.

“Your mind wandered,” Sulung said, breathing heavily, his own face pale with strain. “You believed the fall instead of the stone.”

“It gave way,” Bungsu whispered, staring wide-eyed at the empty space between the clouds.

“It gave way because you let it.” Sulung gripped his brother’s shoulder tighter, transferring his own unshakeable certainty into the smaller boy. “Look at my feet. Do not look at the drop. The steps are there if we refuse to let them vanish.”

Bungsu swallowed hard, forcing his eyes away from the terrifying expanse below and fixing them entirely on the back of Sulung’s jacket. He gripped his own wrist, feeling the living warmth of the red thread steadying his frayed nerves and anchoring his racing heart against the panic.

Together, they took the next step. Then another. Where Bungsu’s doubt had dissolved the vapor, Sulung’s sheer, unyielding willpower—paid for by every rule and sacrifice they had ever carried—forced the surrounding clouds to knit back together into a fragile, glowing path.

Step by careful step, the brothers climbed higher through the white abyss, leaving the dissolved stairs behind them until the massive, beetle-scaled silhouette of the sky longhouse finally loomed out of the mist above, its ancient timbers humming with silent, watchful power.
